1. What is PlaySport London: Free Sport?

PlaySport London: Free Sport, as part of the Mayor’s Plan ‘A Sporting Future for London’, aims to provide free sporting opportunities to Londoners. The PlaySport London: Free Sport programme provides grant funding to sports clubs and community groups in order to encourage greater participation in sport in the build up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

2. What sports are eligible?

The PlaySport London: Free Sport programme welcomes applications from all kinds of sporting and non-sporting organisations to put on sports activities for members of the public.
In 2009 activities covered in the programme ranged from tennis to tai chi, from rugby to roller skating. We are particularly keen to receive applications that provide an opportunity to try out one of the Olympic and Paralympic sports that will take place in the 2012 Games.

We have created as definitive a list of sports as possible. If your sport is not on this list, or does not fall under a more general heading please highlight this in your application supporting information

3. What support does PlaySport London: Free Sport offer?

All successful applicants will receive marketing and media support in the form of local and London wide advertising, coverage on the PlaySport London: Free Sport website and through branding material for your activity such as posters and T-shirts.

We have a dedicated support team that is on hand to deal with any questions you have about running your activities. Each Pro-Active Partnership will also be holding application surgeries during the application phase to ensure that you receive advice and tips on how best to fill out your application form.

4. What financial support is available?

You will be able to apply for up to £1,500, however, the programme can only fund up to 75% of your complete activity cost, so please ensure you have sufficient partner funding in place.

5. What marketing support is available?

The programme will be promoted within the capital. You will also be offered a press release template to help you promote your activities locally. The PlaySport London: Free Sport website will host details of your activities, which last year received over 4,000 hits over the summer.

6. Do I need experience to take part?

No, we welcome applications from all organisations and will offer you the level of support you need to deliver successful activities.

7. Are disabled only activities eligible?

Yes, we welcome applications for activities that are disabled only, but also encourage organisers to deliver activities that are aimed at all groups inclusively. All PlaySport London: Free Sport activities must be accessible to disabled people. Interactive is a partner of PlaySport London: Free Sport and will be available to provide organisers with advice and guidance during the application process.

8. Do I need to cater for disabled people?

Yes, all PlaySport London: Free Sport activities must be accessible to disabled people.

9. Do I need to provide transport?

No, people are expected to make their own way to activities.
 
10. Can I charge participants?

All activities must be free to participants for the duration of the PlaySport London: Free Sport. Following the completion of your funded activities you are able to charge for continued participation.

11. How do I register a proposed activity?

Read the criteria for applying for funds then complete the online application form available here.

12. When is the deadline for registration?

The deadline for applications is 5pm, 8 October 2010. Please submit your application as soon as possible.

13. I am not a club or an organisation, just an individual who would like to hold an activity – is this possible?

Yes it is possible however there will be a number of criteria that you will have to satisfy. For example, you must be insured to hold an activity and you must have a child protection policy. Please complete the application form and the funding panel will assess your eligibility to hold your proposed activity.

14. I would like to organise a whole series of activities – is that possible?
 
This year’s programme encourages series of activities, as a focuses is on increasing long-term participation. You do not need to apply more than once for a series of activities.  We do not encourage multiple applications.

15. What does ‘on-going participation’ mean?

It means that participants at your activities continue to participate in sport even after your programme has finished, either as a member of your club or organisation, another club/organisation, or individually.

16. I have applied to register an activity, but have not heard anything yet. What happens next?

When your application form has been submitted you will receive a confirmation email.
Following funding panel meetings, all applicants will be contacted. We aim to have contacted all applicants by 15 November 2010.

17. What can the grant funding be spent on?

Your funding should be spent on essential elements of your activities e.g. venue hire, equipment hire or purchase, coaching staff, other staff costs

18. Does my series of activities need to be in London?

Yes, a criterion of the programme is that your series of activities must be held within one of the 32 London boroughs or the City of London

19. Can I apply offline?

20. What age groups can participate?

Anyone can participate, there is no limitation on age, and we encourage applications catering for all different age groups.

21. Do we need our own facilities to host series of activities?

No, you can use your funding to hire a venue, or hire or buy equipment, if you do not have your own facilities.

22. When would I get the money?

Following confirmation of your successful application you will receive a grant funding agreement. You should fill this in and return it as soon as possible.  You will receive your funding following receipt of your completed and signed grant funding agreement.

23. I ran a PlaySport London activity last year, can I apply again?

Yes, you can apply for funding this year, but please ensure that you clearly demonstrate how you will deliver new activities and/ or attract new participants to your activity.  Please complete the section of the application form giving details of your activity last year.

24. What level of ability should participants be?

Anyone can participate, there is no limitation on level of ability, and we encourage applications catering for all different levels of ability.

25. Is there an age limit for participants?

No, you can organise activities for people of any age group.
